Winter Fuel Payment

Winter Fuel Payment used to be only payable to those who were in receipt prior to leaving the UK. However, the CJEU judgment of August 2012 means that people living in another EEA member state or Switzerland are now eligible as first-time claimants. Your entitlement to a Winter Fuel Payment depends on your circumstances in the qualifying week which for winter 2013/14 is the week beginning 16th September 2013. You may get a Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2013/14 if you were born on or before 5 July 1952. Claims must be received by 31st March 2014.

The Winter Fuel Payment is £200 per household where a qualifying person lives. So a couple will normally get £100 each. If someone is over 80 they will receive £300 if they are the only person in the household or £150 per person if more than one person is aged 80 or over. If one person is 80 or over, and one under 80 you will receive £200 and £100 respectively.

Some people can claim Winter Fuel Payment for the years 1997/98 – 1999/2000 but they must be claimed by March 2014. Payments for years from 2000/01 to 2012/13 cannot be claimed now.
